    Cy Grant Author/Actor/Musician

           Cy Grant

Saturday 11th November 06, CCS be interviewing veteran Cy Grant, live from
London, about his new book: A Member of the RAF of Indeterminate Race

Anyone old enough to recall the BBC TV programme "Tonight" in the late
50's/early 60's will surely remember Cy Grant.  An established stage and
film actor, he was first black entertainer with this regular spot on British
    TV.

Also recognised as the voice of Lieutenant Green in the Captain Scarlet
series, Cy was a qualified barrister and commissioned officer in the RAF -
one of about 400 Caribbean personnel to qualify as aircrew serving in World
    War II.

In his new book, Cy chronicles his early life, RAF training and experiences
and, narrating with modesty and good humour, his capture by the SS and
subsequent two years spent as a POW.

The book's title "A Member of the RAF of Indeterminate Race", refers to the
caption under his photograph which appeared in a popluar German newspaper
shortly after his capture.  it was supposedly intended as propaganda to
demonstrate "the depths to which the British were prepared to stoop in
    fighting their war".

The irony, is a Britain fighting to defend his mother country against a
racist regime.  A country that had not only in former times enslaved his
ancestors but which doubted the suitability of black and ethnics to join the
    RAF.

With Rememberance Day in our minds, it is worth noting Cy's comment, "that
the contribution made by black servicemen is only now slowly being
acknowledged due to the unspoken racism that still bedevils our
misconceptions about "race".  What do we mean by race?  There is only one
human race.  We not only have to acknowledge the contribution of the dark
few, but work together to achieve a decent society for all."
"A Member of the RAF of Indeterminate Race" published by Woodfield, price
    £9.95.(www.woodfieldpublishing.com)
