5/11/2008 Quote Welcome to Manchester - but in KentThe
heatwave appeared to get the better of RnB star Usher when opened Radio
1's Big Weekend in Maidstone, Kent - he told fans of his delight at
being in Manchester. The American singer made the blunder as he
performed in sizzling temperatures in the event's main tent, which is
the largest of its type in Europe with a capacity for up to 12,000
people. About 20,000 people were let through the gates as the
two-day event opened at midday. Revellers made the most of the hot
weather and basked in the sunshine as they watched acts including
Robyn, The Feeling and Vampire Weekend perform in Mote Park. Manchester
band the Tings Tings, who were the first act to perform on the second
stage drew a large audience, and their energetic set soon had the crowd
singing along to recent singles Great DJ and That's Not My Name. Afterwards
the duo said they were "shocked" by the audience's warm reaction as
they were unused to playing to such large crowds of people. They joked
that they needed to start rehearsing in festival conditions as it was
so hot on stage. Demand for tickets to this year's Big Weekend
was the highest in the event's history, which has been taking place in
its present format at venues across the country for the past three
years. More than 500,000 people applied for the 30,000 tickets on
offer, with tickets being allocated through a lottery system, although
a large proportion were given to residents of Maidstone and the wider
area. Radio 1 DJ Edith Bowman said she was "really happy" to be attending the event. The
Scottish presenter, who is eight months pregnant with her first child,
said: "There's a really nice atmosphere around the place. You can't ask
for better weather. It's phenomenal."Other acts performing
across the event's four stages today include Scouting for Girls, The
Futureheads and Editors, with Madonna headlining the main stage in the
evening

| African Soul Rebels return to Manchester
|
|
Welcome to this African flavoured Artslist broadcast. Getting your heads, hearts and feet moving with the sounds of reggae, ska, jazz and funk at The Bridgewater Hall.
African Soul Rebels III Femi Kuti, Akli D and Ba Cissoko
The Bridgewater Hall
Monday 19 February, 7.30pm
We bring you yet another thrilling package of music featuring a triple bill of modern African musicians: funky pan-African roots sounds for heads, hearts and feet.
Femi Kuti's version of Afrobeat has been the most exciting new sound to emerge from Nigeria for years, borrowing the best elements of funk, jazz, R&B and dance music with lyrical concerns for justice and peace in Nigeria and beyond.
Guinean kora master Ba Cissoko and his band aim to do for the West African Mandinka tradition what Jimi Hendrix did for the blues - take it forward without forgetting the music's deep, traditional roots.
Algerian-born singer-songwriter Akli D's rootsy Berber blues incorporates trance-like North African rhythms as well as traces of reggae, ska and folk music. He sings of his experiences as an immigrant in Paris, the plight of Chechen orphans and in support of Algerian women in their struggle for self-determination.
"A delight, and a marker for 21st century African Music" The Observer (on Ba Cissoko)
"Rootsy, poetic and political - Akli's future looks rosy indeed". **** Top Of The World Songlines (on Akli D)

Love v Lust
The Robert Powell Theatre The University of Salford
Wednesday 28th February, 5.30pm
Present by Commonword Poets - Abi Idowu, Frisko, Helen Clare, Michelle Green and Tony Walsh. Host - Julian Daniel
Commonword's latest poetry battle is coming to town and two teams of poets will lyrically joust it out to settle a dispute over the ultimate relationship high: is it the slow-burner of love or the fast fury of lust?
